Carefree Chocolate: A Sweet Treat for a Stressed-Out World
I won’t lie to you, I absolutely adore chocolate. There isn’t much in my house because when it enters, it vanishes quickly. It might be the ghosts or it might be my stomach…I guess I’ll never know. Now recently, my husband made me aware of the fact that there’s chocolate that helps to calm me down and I was shocked.
There are nights when my mind refuses to soften and everything feels sharp around the edges. It’s hard to explain if you haven’t experienced it before, but if you have, then you know what I mean. A lot of nights sleep feels like a door I can see but never open. My body aches with exhaustion, yet my thoughts march endlessly, stacking themselves into towers of worry until I stress myself out about what will happen when they fall.
The hours slip by in silence, and the darkness presses close, thick with everything I can’t put down.
If you live with anxiety, you know the weight of these nights when the nervous system just doesn’t care that the day is done and instead keeps standing guard, vigilant, pulsing, unwilling to let the body rest.
On those nights, I’ve found a small treat that helps me breathe a little deeper: a square of Carefree Chocolate.
A Father’s Love Wrapped in Cacao
Carefree Chocolate began as an act of love.
Chris Peruzzi, a single father, created it for his children. His daughter struggled with PMS while his son stuffered with stress and anxiety. He wanted to give them something that didn’t taste like medicine or come in a bottle of capsules, but brought with it comfort, joy, and healing all wrapped together.
So he turned to chocolate, because…I guess he’s got a sweet tooth like me. Sacred cacao, long before it was mass-produced into supermarket candy bars, was once a holy medicine of the Maya and the Aztec. It fueled warriors, nourished mystics, and bound lovers. It used to be extremely bitter, ceremonial, and revered. I listened to a My First Million Podcast where they talked about the richest man in Italy and you know what he did? His family turned chocolate into what it is today with Ferrero Rocher.
Anyway, Chris took that timeless ingredient we all love today and blended it with calming botanicals, creating a chocolate that doesn’t just taste sweet, but feels like safety.
What began as one father’s small experiment became The Functional Chocolate Company: a collection of bars meant to soothe the human experience. They have Sleepy Chocolate, Painfree Chocolate, and Brainy Chocolate. For me, it’s Carefree that matters most, because it carries the story of love pressed into sweetness. It’s also the one I needed most, but definitely not why it’s my favorite.
Chocolate is already its own kind of medicine. Rich cacao contains magnesium, a mineral that loosens tension from muscles and relaxes the nervous system. It holds compounds that nudge serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins…the alchemy of joy inside the brain.
Carefree Chocolate has a symphony of calming allies inside of it with PharmaGABA® and L-Theanine: neurochemicals that promote relaxation without grogginess. Passionflower, lemon balm, chamomile, and kava kava find their way in too, which we all know are ancient herbs known for their ability to hush the body’s alarms. Mint and bourbon vanilla are aromas and flavors that ground the senses, cooling the mind as the chocolate melts.
Together, they all create a very pleasant experience where my sleep somehow finds its way back to me. (Yes, the sleep was lost, not me).
A Kiss of Sweetness
I don’t eat it every night, and that’s why it works. I’m a believer in moderation wherever possible and I hate to develop any sort of dependency on anything in this life (minus my husband, he’s stuck with me forever).
These chocolates melt slowly, grain by grain, until the edges of my anxiety melt with it. If I’m lucky the thoughts that were jagged become less sharp, and that’s enough to carry me into sleep. Other times I stay awake, but with less panic, less weight on my chest.
I’ve always hated hustle culture, people bragging about how many hours they worked never made sense to me at all. Why would anyone want to work 90 hours a week unless their pay was directly correlated to it? The world teaches us to rush, to juggle, to endlessly strive and it’s all a bunch of bull in my opinion. Stress convinces us that slowing down is weakness, but a single square of chocolate can help for just a few hours.
Anxiety is a thief of surrender and sleep and convinces you to stay braced, to keep fighting, and to remain always alert.
Carefree Chocolate hasn’t cured my trauma or insomnia, but it lets me loosen my grip, unclench my jaw, and lay down my invisible armor for just a little while.
And that little while is sometimes all I need.
